How to choose reliable and durable steel shots

The core of steel shot durability lies in balanced hardness and toughness, few hollow defects, pure composition, and thorough heat treatment; Low-cost steel shot may seem cost-effective, but its high breaking rate accelerates the wear of the shot-blasting blades and protective plates, resulting in higher overall costs. For foreign trade procurement, priority is given to SAE J441 / ISO 11125 standards.

1. Core Technical Indicators (Must Refer to Ordering)

1). Hardness (the most critical factor)

- Routine cleaning: HRC40-50, balancing rust removal efficiency and shatter resistance, making it highly versatile

- Heavy rust removal/steel structures: HRC50-55

- Shot peening reinforcement: HRC52-58

Misconception: The higher the hardness, the better it works. If hardness is too high> 58HRC loses toughness and easily breaks into dust; With a hardness < 38HRC, it easily flattens and deforms, significantly reducing cleaning efficiency. Only 3HRC for hardness fluctuations in the same batch is considered qualified≤±

2). Chemical composition

- C0.71.2%Mn0.61.2%Si0.41.2%

- S, P 0.05%, the lower, the better; Excessive sulfur and phosphorus have poor toughness and are prone to breakage upon impact.

For foreign trade orders, the manufacturer must provide a material analysis certificate

3). Density and internal defects

- Density7.4g/cm³; Low density means more internal pores and hollows, greatly reducing lifespan.

- Proportion of hollow, cracked, and irregularly shaped particles: 5%; Hollow pills shatter easily and have almost no cleaning effect, only increasing consumption and dust.

4). Metallographic structure

Qualified: tempered martensite / tempered qustenite; There is no coarse network of carbides. Steel shot without tempering is brittle and its service life is directly halved.

5). Roundness and particle size distribution

- Sphericity rate 85%, full spherical shape; There are many flat pellets and irregular pellets with tails, poor fluidity, uneven throwing, and a tendency to clog the separator.

- Particle size strictly matches SAE grades (S110/S170/S230/S280/S330, etc.), with concentrated particle size and minimal size mixing.

2. Simple on-site identification method (sampling upon receipt)

1). Look at the appearance

High quality: silver-gray metallic luster, smooth particles, few hollows, few cracks, little debris, and very little dust at the bottom of the bag.

Poor quality: large amounts of hollow holes, flat pieces, broken granules, thick dust at the bottom of the bag; Part of the material is recycled and recycled pellet mixing.


2). Tapping test

Take a few and smash the steel plate: good steel shot sounds crisp and rebounds well; A light hammer strike will only flatten and deform it, not break into multiple pieces; Inferior quality shatters instantly with a single tap.


3). Actual machine validation

Continuous operation for 8-24 hours to observe:

- Dust from the dust collector increases abnormally Severe steel shot breakage

- Frequent and large doses of supplements poor quality

- Surface roughness of the workpiece fluctuates between high and low unstable particle size and sphericity

Note: Do not confuse normal wear reduction with brittleness breakage. Steel shot is ground slowly and smaller, not broken with a single impact.

3. Distinguish easily confused categories

1). Cast steel shot (commonly used): spherical, long cycle life, suitable for shot blasting machines.

2). Steel wire shot cutting: angular particles with extremely high toughness, commonly used in strengthening processes.

3). Cast iron shots: Extremely hard HRC58-65 but very brittle and have a very short lifespan. Many low-priced products mix cast iron shots to pass off as cast steel shots, causing a sharp increase in consumption and accelerating component wear.

4. Principles of Selection and Matching

1). Rust removal for ordinary castings and steel structures: cast steel shot HRC42-48, SAE S230-S330

2). Sand cleaning for thin-walled parts and castings: medium particle size S170-S230, do not choose too hard

3). Shot peening strengthening: high-toughness cast steel shot or wire shot cutting

4). Stainless steel workpieces: Use stainless steel shot to prevent iron contamination of the workpiece surface.

5. Key points to avoid pitfalls in procurement and foreign trade

1). Don't just compare unit prices; calculate abrasive consumption per unit workpiece + component loss. Low-priced steel shot accelerates wear on blades, directional sleeves, and protective plates, resulting in higher overall costs.

2). Each batch must provide: hardness report, spectral composition, and particle size screening report; Exports to the EU require REACH compliance certification.

3). New suppliers first test samples on machines to confirm the breakage rate, then place large orders.

4). Prioritize manufacturers with complete processes: medium-frequency melting + centrifugal atomization + quenching + tempering + multi-stage screening; Small factories skipping tempering are a major issue of quality failures.

6. Usage Tips to Extend the Life of Steel Shots

- The equipment separator must be properly debugged and promptly separated from the pellet and dust; Keeping shot fragments in the system accelerates wear of good steel shot and also wears down the throwing head fittings.

- Regularly replenish new pills; do not wait until all are broken before switching to new ingredients.
